Yes, my little brother knows how to have a party. Wow a room full of people with the Fialkowski last name or lineage coming to celebrate my little brother getting older. Kate is right, how strange to no longer sit at the children's table, how strange we are now the matriarches and patriarches of these next generations, how we all missed those that have gone before knowing how proud they would be to see David Joseph celebrating a milestone no one ever thought was achievable. My eyes glistened during that moment of silence.

My thanks to our sisters for arranging the details and my thanks to Dr. Seuss:
Congratulations, David
This was your day!
You’re off to Great Places!
You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself any direction you choose.
You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.

Dear Katie,
Such a beautiful homage to your sister-in-law, Kathryn M. Fialkowski. You painted the picture of her soul and made her one that all would want to honor and know. Her gifts for soaring above the frey were many, and your gifts with words always help us soar to the highest of our selves. It was a special treat for my soul to read your tribute to Kathryn. Peace be unto your heart. Love, Barbara

Thanks for posting your update, Katy. It's thoughtful and well written, as usual. I'm taking the big step of teaching a course on Justice and the Family for the first time this spring. I have 12 students from different backgrounds and the conversations are interesting.

Especially for those of us born in families from immigrant backgrounds, we are never "completely separate." Our lives are inextricably linked with the lives of family members, whether we choose to distance ourselves and "live our own lives" or get more involved hands-on with disabled sibs. My parents' decisions about how to care for my brother affect my life, my marriage, my career, and my travel plans. And the opposite is true: the way I choose to live, where I live, what job I have, also affects my brother's quality of life and my parents' health.
