My life transition? This year I've taken a new job in a new state. It means a big transition for me but it forces my brother into a transition as well. Our lives are intertwined, I impact my brother's transitions -- residential, day, work, whatever. And my brother impacts mine -- the people I date, the jobs I take, where I live.

Computer-Synthesized Communications? Facilitated Communications? Ouiji Boards? PEC Boards? Today we are on the verge of true universally designed Personal Communications brought to you by iPad.

Why is this important? Many reasons but here is just one: In the self-advocacy and self determination movements the dividing line within our own community is whether an individual can express themselves. On the one side those who can speak for themselves, on the other parents and other caregivers are the defacto "voice" of individuals who cannot speak for themselves. To provide an individual a) the capacity to initiate instead of only be a respondent and b) to provide the individual the capability to make a choice -- it shifts the balance of power. It is the seed that produced self-determination. It blurs the line. It reunites our community.

This "so what" has got to be nurtured. Get on board the iPad train and buy TWO -- one for your child, family member and one for a friend. It will be worth every penny you saved up. Get involved, get your school involved, get your provider involved. And, let's get Apple involved!!!
